Lo mejor de “The cure” es que, es una banda que se resiste a encasillarse en un genero, ya que su música varia entre el Post punk, new wave, rock alternativo, rock gótico, dance rock, Indie rock, college rock.
The Cure comenzó a difundir su música en la década los 70´s con su álbum debut Three Imaginary Boys (1979), El sonido de varios de sus primeros sencillos colocaron a la banda como parte los movimientos post-punk y New Wave que habían surgido a raíz de la revolución punk rock en el Reino Unido. Durante la década los 80´s, el sonido de la banda se torno más oscuro y atormentado lo cual ayudó a que formaran parte del género del rock gótico.
Con el sencillo de 1982 “Let’s Go to Bed” Smith comenzó a inyectar una sensibilidad y sonido mas pop a la música de la banda.

The Cure first began releasing music in the late 1970s with their debut album Three Imaginary Boys (1979); this, along with several early singles, placed the band as part of the post-punk and New Wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom. During the early 1980s, the band’s increasingly dark and tormented music helped form the gothic rock genre.
With the 1982 single “Let’s Go to Bed” Smith began to inject more of a pop sensibility into the band’s music.
