Conelrad is a British musician in the IDM camp of electronic music. His music tends to be calm, melodic and immensely listenable. It is amenable to either background or attentive listening. All of his music is freely available from his web site. The latest offering is Sure is The Risk Made and it offers a wide range of cinematic sounds and calming atmospheres.

Two other albums are available. They are more ambient in nature but still calming music. Function Creep is slightly darker in mood than Sure. Community Shelter Planning is drone inducing and my least favorite of the three. Yet it would make a good meditative listen.

All three albums are available from the artist’s website in MP3 format.

Michael Jackson to be honored at Grammy's with 3D spectacle

Michael Jackson will be commemorated with the first 3D telecast of an awards show in history. The Grammy Awards will show a video clip of “Earth Song” that was intended for the This Is It tour but was never screened. Alongside the clip big name stars like Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson and Usher will be singing. Michael Jackson was asked to appear on the show for the 25th anniversary of Thriller but declined. Last year, as the Grammys were approaching, the show’s executive producer was in frequent talks with Michael Jackson to appear on the telecast to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Thriller.”

Ken Ehrlich, the Grammy telecast’s co-executive producer, had presented several ideas for performers, including Justin Timberlake and Usher, all of which excited Jackson. But in the end, he declined the show’s invitation.

“He just wasn’t ready for it,” Ehrlich said.

This year, Jackson will be a focal point of the show, with an unprecedented posthumous tribute. The Grammys will broadcast a 3-D clip the singer made for his hit “Earth Song,” a video that was to be integral to his comeback concerts in London in July 2009 – shows that never happened because of his June 25 death in Los Angeles.

Usher, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson will perform alongside the clip, which Ehrlich says will be the first time an awards show will feature 3-D.

“Whenever we would do a show with [Jackson], the first thing he would say to me was, `How can we do something that we [have] never done before?’ And now we’re doing something that hasn’t been done before,” said Ehrlich, who worked with Jackson for almost 30 years, in an interview Tuesday.

Ehrlich produced the televised memorial to Jackson last year. He was with the singer the night before he died – and that’s when he first saw the 3-D clip of “Earth Song,” a call to action about the destruction of nature and animals by man.

“There are these incredible images of the beauties of nature, and then they are seen through the eyes of a little girl, and that girl falls asleep and when she wakes up, she is witness to the destruction of nature,” said Ehrlich. “It’s all about questioning what our values are.”

While a part of the clip was shown in the recent movie documentary “This Is It,” Ehrlich says the Grammys will show the full piece in 3-D. When he saw it with Jackson that night, Ehrlich said the singer was moved to tears.

“It was pretty emotional for him,” Ehrlich said. “Afterward he said to me that that song and that piece and that portion of the concert was as important to him than anything else in the show.”

Ehrlich decided to use the five-minute 3-D clip at the Grammys to produce a show-stopper worthy of Jackson, who provided the awards show with some of its most memorable moments, including his then-historic eight Grammy wins in 1984.

“The promise is this is going to be pretty spectacular,” he said.

Viewers can get free 3-D “Grammy” glasses from Target stores nationwide from Jan. 24 through Jan. 31, when the 52nd annual Grammy Awards will air live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on CBS (8 p.m. EST). Ehrlich says TV viewers can see the clip without the glasses, but won’t see the 3-D effect.

Jackson will be honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy during the show.

“This is the one award from us that Michael never received,” said Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow.

Portnow said he expected Jackson’s family to be in the audience but their attendance hasn’t been confirmed.”

Ok, first off I’m sorry I’ve been such a lazy asshole and not posting. I’ve been in kind of a music slump and other things have been taking over life, like my rigorous TV schedule and tequila. Lately I’ve been super picky about the music I want to post on here, because the point of this blog is to post really quality music that doesn’t  get old, and for some reason I haven’t been finding too many of those gems. But don’t worry- I’ve got a few select things for you that I promise will satisfy that longing in you for something new and awesome. Believe me. And download. They’re free, people, the world wants you to have them.

Emalkay – When I Look at You

This song is RIDICULOUS. Dub-step fans, gather round- this is a godly anthem that will be stuck in your head for days. I can’t stop listening.

White Lies – Death (Chase & Status Remix)

A friend introduced me to this one and I’m so thankful he did. This Chase & Status remix is, as the young folk would say, “on fire.” This London-based pair make some intense music, and this song is no exception. I feel like I’m in the Twilight movie when I listen to it (take that as you will, I don’t give a shit. I don’t get the Twilight concept anyway.)

Deadmau5 – I Remember feat Kaskade (Caspa Remix)

The obligatory dub-step remix of the classic trance tune that got everyone talking about Kaskade. But it’s Caspa, and it’s really really good. Definitely not one of those “remixes for the sake of being a remix” remixes.

Music and lyrics

“Somebody to Love” is an uptempo electropop and trance song that harks elements of Blue Monday by New Order. It draws influences of pop music, electronica and R&B with Robin Thicke’s vocals. Meester said in an interview that “the song is basically about how I can’t get any — I can’t find anyone to love.” “I really wanted to make something that’s completely different from anything that’s on the radio right now,” said Leighton. “I feel like it’s really dancy and fun, but it’s still laid back and relaxed and moody and sexy.” Of the single, songwriter Love stated to MTV that “I was honored when I found out that my record was chosen to be Leighton’s first single. It’s exciting to be able to show a different side of my work and me.”

Critical reception

Bill Lamb of About.com gave the song four stars commenting on Leighton Meester’s “sexy, slinky vocals, Robin Thicke’s smooth, intimate voice, and the electropop synth driven singalong chorus,” but disregards that there are few lyrical revelations. Overall, he thinks that this song should help build significant anticipation for her debut album saying that “It provides a fitting context for Meester to purr and cavort around the synth chords and electro beats. R&B – pop star Robin Thicke provides his own smooth and seductive male vocals as a counterpoint. A touch of French in the lyrics adds a bit of elegant sexuality to the overall picture. … It is easy to sing along with and will get listeners dancing at a party. This isn’t simply a quick cash-in on TV success. Leighton Meester contributes highly listenable vocals with an edge of drama and sex. The song has become a surprise hit in Australia being a real dance song in the clubs.”

How to Install Debian (.deb) files through mobileTerminal)

Have you ever downloaded an iPhone/iPod touch app/mod that was in a .deb form and didn’t know how to install it?

Things you need:

Mobileterminal (from Cydia)

1. First, you have to know where the .deb file is (ie. if you downloaded it with Safari D/L Manager it would be in /var/mobile/Media/Downloads)

2. open mobile terminal

3. type “su” (without quotes)

4. it will prompt you for a password. the default is “alpine” (don’t worry if nothing shows up while you type, that’s whats supposed to happen)

5. type “dpkg -i /xxx/xxx/xxx” (where /xxx/xxx/xxx is where the .deb file is. REMEMBER, iPHONE OS IS BASED ON UNIX, MEANING THAT IT IS CASE SENSITIVE.)

6. it will then say some stuff like “selecting packages…”

7. after the command is finished running, you are done

8. exit terminal and respring your device if you were installing a mod (:
